Just a month after her 16th birthday, Nellie Carrington helped Middlesex win the first Women’s Inter-County Championship in 1932, when she won the long jump and finished second in the high jump. Two years earlier, when not quite 14, she won the long jump at the Inter-County Schools Championships with a record leap. Nellie won the Middlesex County women’s high jump title in 1933, when she also enjoyed the first of five WAAA podium finishes. She was third in the high jump, and second in the long jump that year, and went on to have three further second placings, in the long jump (1935-36) and high jump (1936).
