Margaret Erskine

The daughter of Joseph Erskine, a coal merchant and farmer, Margaret Erskine was educated at the Elgin Academy in Scotland, where she started her athletics career. She became a fine long jumper, and won the Scottish national title. After the War she worked at the Cadbury factory in Birmingham, and was a member of the Birmingham Atalanta AC. Although Erskine failed to make the qualifying distance for the final at the 1948 Olympics, by more than six inches (15 cm), she went on to capture the WAAA title in 1949 and 1950. In the second of those years, she finished sixth at the European Championships. Erskine later became a PE teacher, and in 1954 married a local Elgin doctor, Stanley Luckas, who died in his mid-30s in 1963.
