Jean Hiscock enjoyed just one senior WAAA podium, finishing third in 1960 behind Dorothy Hyman and Jenny Smart in the 220 yards. That year the trio competed in the Roma Olympics 200 metres but Hiscock, who had suffered year-long back problems, failed to qualify from her heat, while Hyman went on to win the bronze medal.
Hiscock attended Redland High School in Bristol and started winning races from the age of ten. After showing promise as a sprinter, she joined the Bristol and West Athletic Club while still at school and at the age of 15 won the Gloucestershire 100 and 220 yards titles. She also became the Midlands´ WAAA 200 metres champion.
After leaving school Hiscock joined Lloyds Bank as a clerk. She married engineering graduate Graham Hall in December 1960 and shortly afterwards moved to Manchester with her husband´s job. Hiscock immediately joined Salford Harriers, where two of her team-mates were the Australian hurdler Betty Moore and the British Olympic high jump silver medallist Dorothy Shirley.
Best: 200 – 24.3y (1959).
