A Kent champion at 100- and 220 yards, Ann Johnson went on to become a double WAAA 220 champion in 1953 and 1954, having finished third behind six-times winner Sylvia Cheeseman in 1952. Johnson failed to progress beyond her heat in the 200 metres at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, but she did better at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954 when, representing England, she finished fourth in the 220 yards and fifth in the long jump. That same year, she was one of three British girls to reach the semi-final of the 200 metres at the European Championships at Berne, but only one of them, Shirley Hampton, made it to the final. Hampton had finished second to Johnson at that year’s WAAA.
Personal Best: 200 – 24.8 (1953).
