Winner of the Midland 4-mile title as a 19-year-old in 1927 and the mile in 1928, Stan Ashby achieved his best placing at the AAA Championship in 1919 when he finished second in the mile. He made his international début on the eve of his 20th birthday and was, at the time, the youngest-ever athlete to represent Great Britain in the 1500m/mile. His personal best for 2,000 metres was within one second of Alfred Shrubb’s UK best for the distance.
