Art Astley was a three-time winner of the Northern 440y (1909-10, 12) and 880y (1906-07, 10) titles. He was a finalist in the AAA 880y six times (1906-10, 13) and on his first appearance in an AAA final in 1906, he won the title for the only time. At the 1908 Olympics he finished second in his heats of both the 400m and 800m, and failed to advance. It was previously believed that he had been killed in action but research has revealed that he died of cancer in an English hospital.
