Biography

After winning an Olympic gold medal in 1908 as a member of the City of London Police Tug-of-War team, Edward Barrett won a bronze medal in the heavyweight freestyle wrestling. He also competed in the shot, discus, and javelin at the 1908 Games but wrestling was undoubtedly his premier sport and he was the British heavyweight freestyle champion in 1908 and 1911. Barrett also competed in the Greco-Roman style wrestling events at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics but lost in the early rounds on each occasion. In addition, he won an All-Ireland title for hurling as a member of the London team that beat Cork in the 1901 All-Ireland final. As of 2013 this is the only instance where the championship has been won a team from outside Ireland. In July 1914, Barrett resigned from the City of London Police and there is no trace of him in sporting circles after that date.

Personal Bests: SP – 12.89 (42-3½) (1908); DT – 32.66 (107-2) (1908).
