After placing second the 440y hurdles at the 1924 AAAs, Fred Blackett did well to reach the Olympic final where he finished last and was disqualified for knocking down three hurdles. In 1925 he equaled the UK record of 56.8 at the English Championships and then improved to 56.0 in the semi-finals of the AAAs, but failed to finish in the final. He retired from the London Fire Service on health grounds in 1948 and took a job as a fire warden at Ealing Film Studio.
