Later becoming Baroness Burton of Coventry, she was the Northern Counties ladies’ 100 yards champion at the age of 16 and was a Yorkshire county cricketer and hockey player. She founded the National Fitness Council in 1937 and served as MP for Coventry South (1950-59) before being created a Life Peer in 1962. Leslie Burton’s brother Geoffrey also competed in the 1908 Olympic 400 hurdles.
