Despite finishing third in the AAAs triple jump in 1948, Post Office worker Sidney Cross got into the London Olympics as a result of setting an English native record of 14.49 in the AAA versus Wales match shortly before the Games. Unfortunately, at the Olympics, his best jump was a full metre below his personal best, and he failed to make it into the final 14. The 1947 Midland champion, Cross was again third at the AAAs in 1949. However he would go on to twice win the title, in 1950 and 1951.
Personal Best: TJ – 14.72 (1950).
