David Cummings

A member of the Scottish team at the 1921 International Cross-Country Championships at Caerleon, Wales, David Cummings finished 30th out of 36. He never once placed in a track event at the Scottish Championships, but in 1924, finished a distant third in the AAA steeplechase, and won a place on the British Olympic team. Despite his lack of experience, he performed creditably in Paris, finishing fifth in a field of ten, in his heat.

Cummings was always keen on running as a youngster, and joined Paisley Harriers, before later joining Greenrock Glenpark and Maryhill Harriers. In 1924, he was involved in the formation of the Kilbarchan Amateur Athletic Club. The club disbanded in 1955, and following a brief two-year revival in the 1960s, was re-formed again in 1974 with David elected honorary vice president. In 1977 Cummings donated two trophies to the club “The “David Cummings 7-mile Handicap Chase”, and the “George Cummings Trophy”, in memory of his brother who died in World War I. George was also a Scottish international cross-country runner.
