The son of a Preston travelling salesman, Harry Houghton was the winner of six successive Midland 440y titles (1922-27) and a was a three-time winner of the 880y (1923-24, 1926). His best placing at the AAA Championships came in 1926 when he finished fourth behind Otto Peltzer’s world record 1:51.6. Houghton Represented England in the annual match against France in Paris in 1926, finishing second in the 800 metres to fellow Englishman and reigning Olympic champion Douglas Lowe. The distance and cross country runner, and 1932 and 1936 Olympian, Alec Burns, was a cousin of Houghton’s.
