Ernest May was the winner of the shot (1900-01) and the hammer (1901) at the Oxbridge sports. On the North American of the combined Oxbridge team in 1901 he won the hammer in the match against McGill and finished second against Harvard/Yale. At the AAA Championships he finished second in the hammer for three successive years (1901-03) and in 1906 he was disqualified for using a hammer that exceeded the permitted length. He made a final appearance at the Championships in 1909 when he placed fourth. After his Ordination in 1901, he held various ecclesiastical appointments before becoming vicar of Ellingham in 1927 where he spent the rest of his life.
