Steve McCooke did not take up distance running until his mid-20s, when he took up running as a way to train for boxing. He joined the East Antrim Harriers in Ballyclare, and trained with them twice a week, despite a 75-mile bicycle trip he had to make. In 2002 he was inducted into Newtown Abbey Councils’ Sporting Hall of Fame.
