Biography

Dick Miller’s javelin-throwing career lasted a decade and a half, from 1951 through 1966, during which time he won five Northern Irish championships and set the Irish Native record seven times. He made his major international début at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he finished 14th, and was also selected for the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, but could not compete due to his studies. He did attend the next two editions, however, just missing the podium in fourth in 1958 and placing seventh in 1962. In his younger days, he played cricket as a student at the Trinity College, Glenalmon boarding school and later earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Trinity College Dublin.
