Vernon Morgan won the LAC Schools mile in 1922-23 and also the steeplechase in 1923. At Oxford he won blues for soccer (football) (1923) and cross-country (1924-25) and in his only appearance in the University match on the track, won the 3 miles in 1925. He was the Northern mile champion in 1925 and 1930, but the best performance of his career had come in 1929 when he topped the annual British rankings for the mile with 4:16.4 while on an Achilles Club tour in South Africa. He placed third in the AAA steeplechase in 1928-29 and was a bronze medalist at the 1930 British Empire Games. He was for many years the sports editor of Reuters, and was awarded the Olympic Diploma of Merit for his work as a member of the IOC Press and Public Relations Committee. He was also awarded the OBE.
