After finishing second in the Polytechnic marathon in 1931 and 1933 and the AAA race in 1933-34, Bert Norris won both British classics in 1935, when he was the first man to win both races in the same year since they had become separate events in 1928. He won the Poly again in 1936-37 but had mixed fortunes in his international championships: he failed to finish the 1934 British Empire Games and the 1936 Olympic races, but he won a silver medal at the 1938 British Empire Games. He also finished third in the AAA race in 1937 and was second in the 1939 Poly.
