Although overshadowed by George Larner and his Herne Hill clubmate, Ernie Webb, Bill Palmer was one of the leading walkers of his time. His best placements at the AAA Championships were third in the 7 miles (1908) and fourth in the 2 miles (1910). After retirement he remained involved in the sport, serving as President of Herne Hill Harriers in 1921-22, and as a walking judge at the 1948 Olympics.
