Originally a member of Motherwell Harriers he joined Bellahouston Harriers in 1907 when he took part in the AAA Championship at Manchester, finishing eighth in the 7 mile walk. He broke the Scottish 3 mile record in 1906 and in 1910 set a new one mile walking record of 6:45.6.
