Biography

At Eton, Edward Ryle distinguished himself at Fives, but he was not known as an athlete until he excelled as a quarter-mile when he went up to Cambridge. At the Oxbridge Sports he finished second in the 440 y in 1906 and, after missing the 1907 Sports due to injury, he was the winner in 1908. He finished second in the 440 y in 1908 (tied) and 1910 at the AAA Championships. In 1912 he was the compiler and co-author of a notable work, Athletics. On 6 March 1916, his name was removed from the College Boards at Trinity College, Cambridge, but the reasons for this highly unusual action have not been released by the school.

Personal Best: 400 – 49.5e (1908).
