Wallis Walters

Originally from rural Carmarthenshire, Wallis Walters was the winner of the long jump at the Welsh Championships four times (1907-10) and the 120y hurdles three times (1904, 1908, 1912). He placed in both events at the AAAs, finishing as the runner-up to the Scotsman, Robert Stronach, in the hurdles in 1904-05 and placing third in the 1904 long jump. He also won the Midland Counties long jump in 1906, and the 120y hurdles in 1907. His personal best of 16.2 seconds for the 120 yards stood as Welsh record until 1949, although it was equalled on a number of occasions. After graduating from Cardiff University, he became a schoolmaster, teaching science in a secondary school. After his retirement from competition he became a pioneer of schools athletics in Wales.
