As a junior, Stan West was both a high jumper and long jumper and in 1932 was tied second behind William Land in the AAA high jump final. He made the final every year from 1933-37 and won the title in 1935 when he also won the inaugural AAA indoor title at Wembley. He was also the Southern high jump champion four times (1933, 1935-37), and in the 1934 British Empire Games finished tied sixth. He did not compete throughout a large part of 1938, and all of 1939 but after war service with the RAF made a comeback and represented Britain against France in Paris in 1945, before finally retiring. His spent his entire carer with Polytechnic Harriers and represented the AAAs and England on many occasions.
