Biography

Radcliffe-born Albert Wyatt was a miner at the nearby Outwood Collery and started running for Radcliffe Harriers as an 18-year-old, and in his first season won the club cross-country title. Having come second out of 225 starters in the 1908 Northern Junior Cross-Country championships at Haydock Park racecourse, Wyatt also finished second to Fred Lord in the Salford Harriers 20 mile Olympic trial four months before the 1908 Olympics. He was just 300 yards behind Lord, and seven minutes clear of the third placed man which enhanced his selection for the GB team. He was then chosen to represent the North in the Olympic trial in London shortly afterwards but was forced to pull out with less than 10 miles gone through illness. The selectors, however, decided that on his form going into the final trial he was worthy for selection for the British team.
