Hurdler Gudrun Behrend placed fifth at the 1974 European Championships, winning bronze in 1978, and was also a member of a world record relay team in the 4×200 in 1976. She also finished fourth at the 1976 Montréal Olympic Games. Nevertheless she never managed to win an East German national title. Her daughter Katja Wakan also became a sprinter.
