In 1962, Hildrun Claus married her teammate, pole vaulter Peter Laufer, and started under his name in 1964, finishing seventh. Four years earlier in Rome she earned the bronze medal. She came from Dresden (GDR), but later moved to East Berlin. She won GDR national titles in the long jump in 1957-62 and 1964, and set three world records (6.36 and 6.40 in 1960 and 6.42 in 1961). In 1995, she sustained a sports accident, which resulted in paraplegia and she was confined to a wheelchair. She was educated as a landscape designer.
