Shot putter Heike Hartwig reached the final of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and placed sixth eventually. She had several other major results at international competitions: sixth at the 1987 World Championships, second at the 1985 and 1989 World Cups, fifth and sixth at the 1986 and 1990 European Championships, winner of the 1989 European Cup, fifth at the 1989 World Indoors, and finally bronze in 1985 and 1987, silver in 1989 at the European Indoors. Domestically she won East German titles in 1987, 1989 and 1990 (last East German Champion), and indoor national titles in 1985, 1987 and 1989. She retired in 1993 after German re-unification. Her education was as an economy merchant. Later she worked as a trainer and manager at a gym, and then as a department manager at a temporary job agency.
