Rolf Beilschmidt was trained as a tool maker, who later studied Scientific Instrumentation, and since 1991 has been Head of the National Training Center in Thuringia and director of the Olympic Training Base Erfurt. He then became chief executive of the National Sport Association of Thuringia. In 1990 he was the last Vice-President of the Sports Federation of East Germany. He was 1977 East German Athlete of the Year after finishing seventh in the high jump at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, and is married to former 400 m runner Waltraud Kämpf.
Beilschmidt won the 1977 World Cup high jump and placed fourth in 1979, winning bronze at the 1978 European Championships, and the 1975 European Cup, winning this competition in 1977 and placing second in 1979. His East German national titles were 1973-78 (indoor) and 1974-79, and 1981 (outdoor). In 1978 he set a European record, recording 2.29 m.
