Manfred Hinze started his athletics career as a sprinter but then turned to triple jumping in 1958. He finished seventh and sixth at the 1960 Rome and the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, respectively. In 1958 and 1962 he participated in the European Championships but with less success. Hinze was East German Champion in 1959 and 1962, also winning the indoors in 1965. In 1959 he was the first German to triple jump past the 16 metre barrier. Hinze was first educated as a sports teacher but then studied medicine.
