Wolf-Dieter Holtz, a middle distance runner, was eliminated in the semifinals in the 1,500 at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. He was East German cross-country champion in the 4,000 in 1966 and runner-up in the 1,500 m in 1964 and 1966. Holtz was educated as a sports teacher. At his 70th birthday he visited the historical sports facilities at Olympia in Greece.
