Hans-Jürgen Rückborn came in eighth at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the triple jump. At the European Championships he earned a silver in 1966 and finished ninth in 1962. Rückborn also won the 1965 European Cup and was runner-up two years later. Domestically he was East German Champion in 1961, 1963, 1965, also winning indoors in 1966-67. His son Jürgen became a hammer thrower.
Hans-Jürgen Rückborn became one of the most influential sports officials in the Track and Field Association of the former GDR. He was Chairman of the Commission on Culture and Education (1974-1978); Chairman of the Legal Commission (1978-1984); and Treasurer (1984-90). It is unknown what became of him after German reunification.
