Biography

Middle-distance runner Siegfried Valentin was eliminated in the heats of the 1,500 both at the 1960 Roma and the 1964 Tokyo Games. He won the East German 1,500 titles from 1959-61 and 1964, also winning indoors in 1964. In 1960, he set the first official GDR world record in athletics by running 1,000 metres in 2:16.7. In 1958 and 1963 he was a member of world record setting 4x1500 relay teams.

Valentin trained as a plumber and heating installer, but then joined the National People’s Army (Nationale Volksarmee) and was appointed to the frontier troops adjoining West Germany. After reunification he was employed by a civil engineering and construction company.

Personal Best: 1500 – 3:38.7 (1960).
