Marion Steiner was born in Hamburg (West Germany), but grew up in East Germany. In 1969 she moved legally to Romania to marry her coach, the Romanian-German Siegfried Becker. At the 1972 Olympics she started for Romania, failing the qualification round. After the Olympics, she remained in West Germany and left her daughter Almut back in Romania up to 1975. In 1976 she was allowed to start for West Germany after a 2-year suspension. There she won the silver medal. She was German javelin champion in 1976-77 and received the “Silberne Lorbeerblatt” (Silver Bay Leaf) in 1976.
