The son of a Lancashire solicitor, Barlow was educated at Wigan Grammar School and after playing for their Old Boys joined Wigan before moving to Preston North End in March 1907. A clever left-winger he also turned out for the Northern Nomads when required and was a member of the final 18-man squad for the 1908 London Olympics but did not play. However, he did play for England amateurs four times between 1907 and 1913, scoring just one goal, which came in his final match against Ireland. Just before the Olympics he moved to Everton on 11 September 1908 scoring on his début in the 3-2 win over Middlesbrough a week later as Everton went on to finish runners-up in the first division in Barlow’s inaugural season with them. He played just six League games in 1909-10 but played in all Everton’s seven games in the FA Cup that saw them lose in a replay to Barnsley in the semi-final. Barlow spent two and a half seasons at Goodison, scoring five goals in 34 games before returning to Preston in the 1910-11 season. In 94 League and Cup games for North End he scored eight goals. Barlow was selected for the Amateurs against the Professionals in the 1912-13 FA Charity Shield at The Den, Millwall. He remained an amateur throughout his career and worked as an electrical engineer. George Barlow died suddenly in March 1921 on the day he was burying his younger brother Thomas. Their mother Helen had been buried just eight days earlier.
