Biography

After playing for local Manchester Clubs, including the famous Ancoats Lads club, Jack Brennan joined Manchester City as a trainee but it was with Glossop North End that he made his Football League début against Lincoln City in October 1912. He then had half a season at Bradford City in 1913-14 before re-joining Manchester City in July 1914. He stayed at City until moving to Rochdale in 1922, although he never played for the Spotland team. He made 88 Football League appearances and, as an England amateur international wing-half, he was part of the Great Britain squad at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics but did not play in Britain’s only match, the 3-1 defeat by Norway. Brennan served with the Prince of Wales Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment during World War I. The son of a Manchester landlord, Brennan became a publican after his playing days and at the time of his death was the landlord of the Talbot Hotel in Blackpool.
