Scottish-born Coventry Brown was an Aircraftsman in the RAF when called up for the 1936 Great Britain Olympic squad although he never played in either game against China or Poland in Germany. While stationed at Grantham in Lincolnshire he played for the RAF team and also Grantham Town in the Midland League on a few occasions. He also played for the London amateur team Leyton. He gained some notoriety in November 1935 when he was called up by the English FA for their match against Oxford University but the media were quick to point out that he was not English and a week later they withdrew their invitation to Brown to join the squad. However, he made his Scottish début a few months later in the 1-1 draw with Wales at Dumfries. While stationed at Peterborough he played for Northampton Town, making his début in the reserves on the right-wing against Watford in September 1936.
