A well known sprinter and footballer in the Liverpool area, Harry Buck played for Rossendale United and Tranmere Rovers before joining Everton on amateur forms in 1908. The son of a Liverpool publican, his father’s pub was less than two miles away from Everton’s Goodison Park ground. Whilst he was on the club’s books for several years, the speedy right-winger played just one League game for Everton, in the 1-0 home defeat by Bradford City in April 1909. During his time at Goodison, he won the annual Everton and Liverpool Footballers 100 Yards Handicap Cup at New Brighton in 1910 when, off scratch, he beat Liverpool’s Arthur Goddard into second place. A clerk with the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company, his work eventually took him to London and he joined Clapton Orient in February 1914. After the War he played for Millwall before returning to Merseyside and re-joining Tranmere Rovers.
