A free-scoring centre-forward with Drumcondra “B” in the Leinster League, Farrell had a successful first Olympic trial in 1948 but was only a reserve for the second trial. After that game he was selected as one of the five non-travelling reserves for the Olympic qualifying match against the Netherlands at Portsmouth, as Des Cleary got the call up as centre forward. Ireland lost 3-1.
