Biography

German marathon runner and triathlete Sonja Krolik-Oberem finished eighth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was 24th four years later at Sydney. She won the city marathons of Hamburg and Athens in 2001 and 2002, was runner-up at Amsterdam in 1998, and was third at Vienna in 2001 and 2004, Berlin in 2004 and Düsseldorf in 2009. At World Championships she finished eighth in 1995, seventh in 1997, sixth in 1999 and fifth in 2001. In 2002, she won the bronze medal at the Europeans.

Krolik-Oberem was German national champion over 10,000 metres in 1997, the half-marathon in 1998, and cross country (7.6 km) in 1999. As a triathlete she was European champion over the Olympic distance in 1992 and 1994 and won the bronze medal in 1991. In 1993 and 1994 she also became German Champion. In 2003, she was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.

Krolik-Oberem was a graduated business manager by profession. She was elected chairman of the Triathlon Union of North Rheine Westphalia in 2001 and a member of the Executive Board of the European Triathlon Union the following year. She organized several triathlon events professionally with her own agency.
