Fortunato Franco was a Goan who was on the Indian football team at the 1960 Olympic Games, but he never played a match in Roma. He did play and help India win gold at the 1962 Asian Games. Franco played mostly for Tata Football Club in Mumbai, where he worked in the company’s public relations department. He captained his state side, the Maharashtra team, for eight years from 1959-66, leading them to the Santosh Trophy title in 1964. In his last years he played for the Goan team Salgaocar. A knee injury ended his career in 1966. In 2021 Franco was a victim of COVID-19.
