As a youth, the educated businessman Emil Kutterer played for FV Daxlanden, but then switched in 1920 to Karlsruher FV. He became famous at FC Bayern München where he played from 1923-31. In 1925 he made his début in the national team. The first international match of his career was in 1925 in Stockholm against Sweden. In 1928, he was included in the squad of the Olympic football team, but did not play in Amsterdam. Kutterer earned eight international caps.
Kutterer later had a career as a football coach with the following teams – 1936–38 with Tura Leipzig, 1939–41 with Fortuna Leipzig, 1947–49 with 1. FSV Schierstein 08 and Sportgemeinde Mainz-Gonsenheim; 1950–53 with FV Engers, and finally 1953–54 with FC Singen 04.
