Together with his brother-in-law Fritz Szepan, Ernst Kuzorra created the so-called “Schalke tourniquet.” He played for this club from 1915-50, and helped them earn German Championships in 1934-35, 1937, 1939-40, and 1942, also winning the 1937 German Cup. He is still considered a cult figure at Schalke. He made his début in the national team as the first player from FC Schalke 04. It still seems surprising that despite his reputation, he earned only 12 international caps, scoring five goals, but this was due to differences Kuzorra had with national team coach Otto Nerz.
Kuzorra remained with Schalke as a board member and consultant until his death, later as a regular guest of honor, always with a cigar in his mouth in the stadium. By profession, Kuzorra was a mine worker, then owner of a cigar shop. He also coached BV Borussia Dortmund in 1935-36, and later had several years with SpVgg Erkenschwick.
