Liang Shutang was born into an overseas Chinese family in what was then the Dutch East Indies. In 1929, he returned to the mainland to attend Jinan University in Shanghai. Liang then became one of the important players of Jiangnan University during their league period. In 1932, he graduated and joined the football club You-You. In 1933 and 1935, Liang represented Shanghai in two National Games before he was selected for the Chinese team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but he did not get a chance to play there.
After the Olympics, Liang’s game weakened and he was downgraded to a Group C player. In 1940, however, he was transferred to Shanghai’s Donghua team, where he eventually contributed to the team’s victory in the Chinese League. In 1947, Liang retired from competitive football and went to Hong Kong for business.
