The son of a Preston Barrister, Eversley Mansfield was educated at Rossall School in Lancashire and started his football career with their Old Boys before joining Preston Winckley and whilst with them he made his England amateur début at inside-left in the 2-1 win over Ireland at Dublin in 1906. It was England’s second ever International and he replaced Stanley Harris who scored seven goals in England’s first game against France the previous month. Mansfield joined Preston North End in 1907 but never played a League game for them. He also played for Northern Nomads and had loan spells at Barrow, Rochdale, Queen’s Park Glasgow and Manchester United before a move to Manchester City in 1909 for whom he made his only Football League appearance, in a 3-0 defeat by Middlesbrough in the first division. Mansfield was one of Britain’s non-travelling reserves for the 1908 Olympic Games. During World War I he served as a captain and temporary major in the Machine Gun Corps of the King’s Own Royal Regiment and was awarded the 1915 Star after seeing service in France.
