Sprinter Elvira Poßekel won a silver medal with the sprint relay running the first leg at the 1976 Montréal Olympics together with Inge Helten, Annegret Richter and Anne Kroniger only 0.04 seconds behind the relay team from the former GDR. Individually she was eliminated in the 100 m in the second round. She was also expected to start at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, but due to the US-led boycott she could not participate. Poßekel won the 1977 World Cup with the sprint relay, starting for Europe. In 1974 and 1978 she started at the Europeans, and in 1974-76 and 1979 at the European Indoors, winning the bronze medal in the 60 m in 1976. Poßekel earned two West German titles, including the 100 m in 1977. She also won three indoor titles, including the 60 m in 1976 and 1978. She was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf after her silver medal in Montréal, and was educated as a graduated sports teacher.
