Biography

William Martin started his career at the turn of the century as a forward with Ilford before moving to midfield (wing-half) and then settling into the full-back berth, at which position he was chosen for the Great Britain squad at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics although he had to sit out Britain’s three matches. A former captain of the Essex county side, Martin won five England amateur international caps, touring with them on their early European tours in 1910 and 1912. He also toured Sweden and Russia with the English Wanderers in 1911 and signed as an amateur with Huddersfield Town, playing the first of five second division games for them against Burnley on 16 December 1911. During World War I Martin served in the Westminster Dragoons.
