Goalkeeper Dieter Schneider was an unused substitute for East Germany in the bronze medal match at the 1972 München Olympics, which ended in a 2-2 draw, after extra-time, against the Soviet Union. During the period of extra-time, neither team tried to win, because they knew a draw would secure both of them a medal.
Schneider played three international matches between 1969-73. Domestically, he played with SC Empor Rostock, later renamed FC Hansa Rostock. After his playing career, he became a groundsman with Hansa Rostock. He also managed the Hansa pub close to the club’s stadium.
