A stalwart in the Barry Town defence for many years, Julian Smith was one of three Welshman selected for the Great Britain squad at the 1948 Olympics. However, unlike the other two, Gwyn Manning and Frank Donovan, his services were not required. Although Smith was regarded as a full-back for his club, he played as a centre-half in the Olympic trial matches, but lost out to Eric Lee of Chester who got the call-up. Smith continued playing for Barry into the mid-1950’s.
