Dolf van der Nagel had a football career playing as a defender and midfielder for Alcmaria Victrix (1908-09), Velocitas Breda (1909-12), KHFC Haarlem (1912-14), and HVV Den Haag (1914-16). With Haarlem, he won the Dutch cup final in 1913. He retired at the age of 26 to pursue his professional career. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, van der Nagel was an unused substitute for the Dutch team that eventually won bronze. He had to wait until 1914 to play his only international match in a friendly against Denmark. Van der Nagel also represented the regional selection of the Southern Netherlands while playing for Breda and the team of the military.
Van der Nagel pursued a military career. He attended the Cadet School in Alkmaar from 1906-09 and subsequently an infantry training at the Royal Military Academy in Breda, where he began his training for the “infantry in this country” on October 2, 1909. In 1912, he graduated and was appointed second lieutenant. Four years later, he was promoted to first lieutenant and joined the Instruction Battalion in Kampen. Van der Nagel was honourably discharged at his request in 1920.
In 1918 van der Nagel married Campegina Lamberta Vitringa with whom he had three sons. In 1920 the family travelled to Java in the Dutch East Indies, where he worked for the State Railways in various cities on the island of Java, from 1925 until his retirement as inspector. The family returned to the Netherlands in 1939 and settled in Den Haag. His eldest son, Annes Johan Cato, was a member of the resistance movement during the German occupation and died in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1943 at the age of 23.
