Kurt Bendlin was voted German Sportsman of the Year in 1967 and received the “Silbernes Lorbeerblatt” (Silver Bay Leaf). The former policeman and sports teacher later organized outdoor camps and training courses for managers, and published the book “Fitness for Managers”.
In 1967 he became the first German to set a world decathlon record in 34 years with 8,319 points. Bendlin won German titles in 1965, 1967, 1971, and 1974. He was also a model for the sculptor Arno Breker and was cast in bronze. He earned the medal of this color at the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games.
