Steeplechaser Dr. Steffen Brand later earned a medical degree and became a sports medicine specialist at the hospital in Lüdenscheid-Hellersen. He then moved to Lüneburg to run his own surgery for accident surgery, orthopedics, sports medicine and osteopathy.
Beside his fifth and sixth place at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games he took part in the 1993 and 1995 World Championships, placing sixth and fourth. In 1990 he started at the European Championships in the 5,000 metres. He also took part in six European Cups in the 5K and steeplechase and earned 10 German titles in different events. Brand moved to the steeplechase as he was dominated in the long distances by his countryman Dieter Baumann, which lessened his chances to qualify for international competition. In 1997 Brand was awarded the Rudolf-Harbig Memorial Award and also that year became commissioner for athlete’s demands within the German Track and Field Association.
Personal Best: 3000S – 8:14.37 (1995).
